About our Appraiser
K.Jons Jewelry Co. is proud to be the only jewelry store between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Ventura with an in-house, full-time, Certified Jewelry Appraiser and true jewelry historian. Lindsey Marie is a GIA Graduate Gemologist and Certified Member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, the only appraisal association in the United States dedicated solely to the appraisal of fine gems, jewelry, and timepieces. Lindsey Marie also holds a Master of Arts degree from the Bard Graduate Center in New York in the History of Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture. Lindsey Marie's foci was Jewelry History with an emphasis in Early American silver and jewelry as well as the study of 19th and early 20th century revivalism. Her love of jewelry is genuine and includes everything from bold ancient Byzantine and Anglo-Saxon creations to impossibly delicate Art Nouveau jewels, and beyond!
Lindsey Marie's professional background includes nearly 20 years in museum research, exhibitions, and publications at institutions that include the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA), to name a few. Prior to joining K.Jons, Lindsey Marie was the Getty Foundation Curator of Decorative Arts & Design at the Riverside Art Museum, in conjunction with the Getty Museum and Getty Foundation Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative.
We are thrilled to have Lindsey Marie back in her native Central Coast and part of the K.Jons family!
About Appraisals
Lindsey Marie highly recommends bringing all previous documentation related to your appraisal items. Sales receipts, laboratory reports, previous appraisals, and family records can all contain valuable information that may be useful to your appraisal.
Official Appraisals include complete documentation and valuations according to NAJA and USPAP standards, and are accepted by all insurance companies. We provide appraisals for insurance scheduling, to settle an estate, in preparation for a private sale, donation, divorce, and gifts. Each item appraised will receive an accompanying dossier that includes all information needed to obtain insurance. Appraisals under this umbrella include Retail Replacement Value (New) and Fair Market Value. The appraiser can discuss with you which option is best for your needs.
Your jewelry should ideally be in its best condition prior to an appraisal, but it isn't always necessary. Any issues such as loose gemstones, broken prongs, or more serious problems should be addressed before your item is appraised, whenever possible. We can discuss those matters with you while you are in the store. Most appraisals will require you to leave the item at K.Jons and it will be appraised in the order in which it is received. Your items are fully insured while in K.Jons' possession and are kept securely in a bank-style vault. Most appraisals are ready within 1 week. Some items, such as antiques, may require more research time. If you require an appraisal done while you wait, please call for an appointment. Please note that appraisals while you wait can take an hour or more, depending on the item's complexity. Otherwise, no appointment is necessary.
$160 per item.
Estate Appraisal pricing varies. Call K.Jons to speak with Lindsey Marie or Lindsay Jane for more information about Estate Appraisals.
Simple Appraisals include gold and platinum jewelry and items that are not adorned with gemstones or other materials, including other metals. Items suited to this option include, but are not limited to, plain wedding bands, chains, and bangles. This appraisal will include all of the same information as an Official Appraisal and can be used in the same manner.
$100 per item
Unsoldered Wedding Sets that include 2 - 3 rings. Each ring in the set will be appraised separately in accordance with proper appraisal standards. This appraisal will include all of the same information as an Official Appraisal and can be used in the same manner. If your wedding set includes more than 3 unsoldered rings, please call for more information.
$200 per set of unsoldered rings
Verbal Appraisal Consultation is an excellent option if you have numerous items that you don't know enough about, perhaps from Grandmother's jewelry box, and would like some guidance. The appraiser will sit with you privately and help to sort through your items. Together, we will weed out costume jewelry; determine if you might like to scrap any gold for store credit; let you know approximate value ranges for items that do have value; and help you decide if you would like to proceed with any Official Appraisals. You are welcome to bring as many items as you would like. It is often a fun and interesting experience for everyone. This option is not official and only verbal information is provided, but you are welcome to take notes. Appointments are required.
Each session is $125 per hour with a 1 hour minimum
Single Item Verbal Appraisal Consultation is an over-the-counter service for uncomplicated items. This option is not official and only verbal information is provided, but you are welcome to take notes. This usually takes about 20-30 minutes, but if it will require more time, you will need to schedule a Verbal Appraisal Consultation or an Official Appraisal. Appointments are highly recommended.
$25 per item
Appraisal Updates are recommended every 3-5 years because gold and gemstone prices fluctuate. Additionally, your insurance coverage likely includes a rider that requires periodic updates to your jewelry appraisals. Check with your insurance provider to determine your appraisal schedule. The customer is responsible for maintaining an appraisal update schedule and it is not the responsibility of K.Jons or Lindsey Marie to notify you of market changes. For insurance appraisals, your jewelry should ideally be in its best condition prior to an appraisal. Any issues such as loose gemstones, broken prongs, or more serious problems should be addressed before your item is appraised whenever possible. We can discuss those matters with you while you are in the store. K.Jons Jewelry Co. maintains appraisal records from the former K.Jons Diamonds & Gems store owners going back several years, therefore we might be able to provide updates for your previously appraised items. If you had an appraisal done at K.Jons between 2010 and 2019, please call to find out if we have a record of your previous appraisal. K.Jons Jewelry Company keeps copies of appraisals and support materials for 7 years.
$100 per updated item
Appraisal Reprints are available in the event that you have misplaced your report and/or you need to provide a report to an additional party such as an insurer. If another party does require a report, the appraiser will need the name, company, and address of said person/company. Reprints may be available for K.Jons Diamonds & Gems appraisals as well.
$25 per report
